Celebrate Spring With a Beautiful DIY Flower Crown for Kids

Spring Art and Craft Projects for Kids

Spring is right around the corner, and parents throughout New Jersey are already thinking about activities they can do with their kids during the upcoming break from school. One great activity that might not be on your radar is to make a flower crown. Here are two ways you and your little ones can make one together.

Paper bags and duct tape flower crowns

Your kids can assemble cute flower crowns using supplies you probably already have in the house, The Artful Parents says.

What you need:

  • brown paper grocery bag
  • scissors
  • duct tape of any color
  • stapler
  • flowers from your garden
  • glitter
  • markers

How to make it:

  1. Cut open the brown paper bag and cut a zig-zag line along the long side, with the top around 3 inches from the side. This will make one crown. If you have more than one kiddo, cut a straight line about 3 inches down from the zig-zag line, which will give you another crown. If need be, you can get around four crowns from one paper bag.
  2. Cut each long piece of brown bag down the center.
  3. Place a piece of duct tape in between both pieces, sticky side up.
  4. Lay the top and bottom piece on the duct tape, allowing about 1/2 inch of the sticky-sided tape to show in the middle.
  5. Take the flowers you have collected from the garden (dandelions also work great for this project) and press the flowers and/or petals onto the sticky duct tape in any pattern the kids want. You can fill in any un-flowered areas with glitter, and your kids can use markers to design the brown paper.
  6. When they are done, wrap the crown around your child’s head to figure out the fit and staple the ends.

Butterfly silk flower crown

While using real blossoms for a flower crown is pretty, they will not last that long. Since many kids will want to wear their new flower crowns for days on end, consider a quick trip to a craft store to buy some silk flowers and other cute embellishments for a crown that will look pretty for months.

What you need:

  • One or two bunches of assorted silk flowers per crown
  • One yard of colorful ribbon
  • Decorative butterfly or other accent
  • Glitter
  • Hot glue gun or regular glue
  • Coated wire (if your craft store doesn't sell coated wire, swing by the hardware store on the way home and pick up some pieces that are cut to fit the circumference of your kids’ heads)

How to make it:

  1. Shape the wire into a circle and twist the ends together.
  2. Clip the flowers from the bunches, leaving at least 1/2 inch of stem on each one.
  3. Use school glue or the hot glue gun to attach the flowers onto the wire, using plenty of blossoms to cover stems and globs of glue.
  4. Glue on the butterfly wherever you want on the crown and then add a long strand of ribbon to the back center, where you twisted the wire together. You can use more than one piece of ribbon for a more dramatic effect.
