100 Year Old Healthcare Discovery For The Flu Still Valid Today?

Most of us alive today probably are unaware of the worldwide influenza pandemic of 1918-19 that kill 100s of millions of people worldwide. It was estimated that 500,000 Americans died from either the flu or pneumonia during this tragedy. Very little was known about prevention or treatment of the flu virus back then and so the world was very much at the mercy of the deadly disease, at least they thought. Chiropractic was a fledgling profession then and would be a mere 20 years old. To better reference this time, Penicillin was discovered around 1926 and antivirals didn’t appear till the 1960s. The first Flu vaccine was used on soldiers in 1938. Since science was still relatively in the dark, chiropractor relied on a philosophy of vitality, things natural, and adjusting for the removal of nerve interference as a rule. Application of these principles with the chiropractic adjustment as center piece, Chiropractors witness a wide variety of health benefits including recovering form respiratory infections, but a real test came during the Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918. During the aftermath, scientist and official got busy investigating the forensics to learn more about what had just happened. To the surprise of the scientific community, the little-known Chiropractic profession performed amazingly around the country. For instance, in the state of Iowa, medical doctors treated 93,590 patients, with 6,116 deaths - a loss of one patient out of every 15. In the same state, excluding Davenport, 4,735 patients were treated by chiropractors with a loss of only 6 cases - a loss of one patient out of every 789. National figures then show that 1,142 chiropractors treated 46,394 patients for influenza during 1918, with a loss of 54 patients - one out of every 886. In the same epidemic reports show that chiropractors in Oklahoma treated 3,490 cases of influenza with only 7 deaths. But the best part of this is, in Oklahoma there is a clear record showing that chiropractors were called in 233 cases where medical doctors had cared for the patients, and finally gave them up as lost. The chiropractors saved all but 25. Researchers have reported white blood cell and immune boosting benefits of adjustments seen in blood tests. More recently, social media is abuzz with mom testimonials touting relief from chronic, reoccurring childhood ear infections. I’ve personally been on the receiving end of pediatric doctor referrals for years. Being witness to the immune system boosting benefits of chiropractic adjustments for the past century, Chiropractors are adamant about adjusting family members and patients during any immune system challenge.
